John Barr is one of the greatest fly tiers of our time. Naturally, that means he has created some game-changing patterns for the fly fishing industry. One of our favorites at Tailwater Junkie is a Copper John. John Barr created this pattern back in the 1990’s and it has been a go-to for anglers ever since. Depending on the size and color, it can match the hatch from anything from a large stonefly to a very small Blue-Winged Olive (BWO) imitation. It is one of those flies that everyone must have in their arsenal. Our favorite colors to fish are Copper and Red.

Fishing Strategies:
A Copper John is an exceptional attractor imitation and fishes well under a wide range of conditions. Dusk and dawn are two perfect times to tie on a Copper John. It can be fished as an attractor or used as a dropper in a tandem nymphing rig. Some of our favorite droppers off a Copper John are: Mercury Flashback Pheasant Tails, Sparkle Wing RS2, Jujubaetis, Stalcup’s Baetis and Foam Wing Emergers.
